THE GUIDANCE ON THE DISPOSAL OF HOVERBOARDS

The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) issued guidance on the proper disposal of hoverboards.

According to the guidance, consumers should contact a local electronics recycling center if one is available in their area, as hoverboards use lithium-ion batteries, similar to those found in laptop computers. If there is no access to a local electronics recycler, consumers should contact their local waste services provider, municipal or county waste service, and inquire if they can be dropped off at the same locations where those companies and local governments accept other products with lithium ion batteries.

Call2Recycle, a non-profit organization not affiliated with NWRA, offers resources to consumers in the United States and Canada who are seeking guidance on how to properly recycle the lithium ion batteries that power hoverboard products. Consumers can contact Call2Recycle customer service toll-free at 877-723-1297, and Call2Recycle also offers a free drop-off collection site locator, which can be accessed online at call2recycle.org.

HOW TO DO SOFTWARE RESET OF HOVERBOARD?

If you have problem with your hoverboard, 

we recommend to first try to solve it using a software reset.

STEP 1: Shut down the on-off button

STEP 2: Press the on-off button again for 4-5 seconds 

till the blue lights begin to flash.

STEP 3: Adjust the balance, 

meanwhile the blue lights will flash now and then.

STEP 4: After 5-10 seconds shut down power button.

STEP 5: Wait another 5-10 seconds, press the on-off button again.

If software reset did not help, contact the supplier for replacement.

NOTE: If your hoverboard is not charging, try to use another charger 

(eg use your friend’s charger to check if your charger has an issue).

To disassemble a hoverboard is actually quite easy. Most components could be unscrewed by Phillips-head screwdriver, and the bearing blocks needed a metric Allen key to take apart. Electrical connectors came out with modest pressure and occasional help from pliers, with the exception of three wires on each motor, which needed to be pried loose with a screwdriver.

If one of hoverboard parts has an issue, It can be replaced without affecting other parts. Most components can be replaced with relative ease.

IMPORTANT: Disconnect the battery cable first and turn the power button off before unscrewing anything. 

Battery 

The battery pack is what keeps your board going. Battery with a labeled power capacity of 36-37 volts and 4.4 Amp-hours has enough power to move a person.

Wheel Motors

The motors of a hoverboard are inside the wheels, which eliminates many of the mechanical power transmission problems generally associated with powering something.

Wheels also contain a tilt and speed sensor. This detects the rpm (revolutions per minute) of the individual wheel, and sends it to the gyroscope and speed control boards, located inside the main body, right next to the wheels.

Gyroscope & Speed Control Boards

The gyroscope and speed control boards receive the rpms and tilt information from the sensor inside the wheels, and they, in turn, send it to the main logic board.

When you calibrate your board, the gyroscopes are basically “zeroed”, as in, you’re telling the gyroscopes, “this is flat, hence this is when the hoverboard’s tilt is at 0”. 

Main Control Board

The control board (or the logic board) is the “brain” of a hoverboard, and it’s where the processor computes in real time the status of the board, the speed at which you’re travelling, and the relative speed and tilt of the individual wheels.

It also controls the power management of the board, and whether you are in “beginner mode” (thereby limiting the max speed of the board) or if the scooter is “locked”.

Frame

The frame consists of two solid pieces of aluminum with a pivot in the middle that allows it to rotate a few degrees.

The Truth about Hoverboards

Today I wanna write about hoverboards: where all this get started, production process, safety & quality issues! 

Few words about 

History of Hoverboards.

First things first, in 2014, hoverboards appeared in China, and by 2015, they became widely popular in the United States, following numerous celebrity appearances with the device. The fast pace of the Chinese manufacturing industry makes it difficult to pinpoint which Chinese company was the first to manufacture the device. The first hoverboard was exhibited and found success at the 2014 Canton Fair trade show, after the fair the product was copied by several Chinese manufacturers.  As of June 2015, the board is made by several knockoff manufacturers in China. The copies vary greatly in price and quality. Most of the boards are produced in mass manufacturing factories in Shenzhen, China.

Manufactures.

Few days ago I also traveled to Shenzhen, China, "the world's factory," to visit the factories, talk to manufactures, compare quality/prices/delivery time. I spoke with many of the people in the hoverboard supply-chain: small factory owners, sales representatives, workers, and exporters/distributors. The devices' increasing popularity in USA and Western countries with the wide array of celebrities (including, but not limited to Justin Bieber, Jamie Foxx, Kendall Jenner, Chris Brown, Soulja Boy and Wiz Khalifa) who have been seen with various models of the product, pushed factories shut down their production lines (no matter what they were producing) and convert them, almost overnight, to hoverboard manufacturing lines. There are more than 1,000 hoverboard factories in South China now, which were opened or retooled in a very short period of time (within one year!).

Introduction.

Our factory is located in Shenzhen. It was founded in 2008 as a manufacture of electronic cigarettes. Having solid experience with battery-powered product helps us to produce safe high quality hoverboards.

The factory owns about 8,000 m² of production area with over 600 employees. The staff turnover is less than 10% - we create good work conditions for our employess.

Monthly production capacity of hoverboards is more than 100,000 sets.

Build in safety features.

For the connections that link the battery to the motor,  we have a kill switch that engages when the battery temperature gets to 60 degrees Celsius, or when the current exceeds a certain level.

Quality control.

The factory tests 100% of batteries and chargers. Batteries are charged and discharged fully before assembling a hoverboard. Since the motors are part of the wheel, they are fully tested after they are fixed to the hoverboard chassis. The final test is when a person rides the hoverboard.

UL Certification of Hoverboards

What is UL? UL is a global independent testing laboratory that tests consumer products for safety. UL is one of several companies approved to perform safety testing by the US federal agency Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). UL provides safety-related certification, validation, testing, inspection, auditing, advising and training services to a wide range of clients, including manufacturers, retailers, policymakers, regulators, service companies, and consumers. What does UL Mark stand for? If a product carries this Mark, Underwriters Laboratories found that samples of this product met UL's safety requirements. These requirements are primarily based on UL's own published Standards for Safety. This type of Mark is seen commonly on appliances and computer equipment, furnaces and heaters, fuses, electrical panelboards, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems, personal flotation devices like life jackets and life preservers, bullet resistant glass, and thousands of other products.

UL Certification of Hoverboards

It's important to note that UL does not certify entire products like hoverboards. They certify individual components - like chargers and battery packs - so even those hoverboards which have UL-listed parts are not fully certified as a unit by UL. But because the battery pack and charger are by far the likeliest culprits for a potential fire, it is safe to assume that those products with a UL stickers on are safe.

UL announces availability of UL Certification for hoverboards

UL have begun accepting product submittals for “self-balancing scooters.” The UL will evaluate the construction of the devices and, if they pass the company’s tests, certify them as safe under a new certification called UL 2272.

UL2272., also known as “Electrical Systems for Self-Balancing Scooters,” will cover electric drive trains, “including the rechargeable battery and charger system combination for use in self-balancing scooters.” (Read more here: http://ulstandards.ul.com/standard/?id=2272)

IMPORTANT: UL-certified batteries in a hoverboard didn’t count as total UL certification of a hoverboard.
